Raymond DeWalt held construction and mill jobs from the time he left school. This came natural, since he followed in his father's footsteps. DeWalt always had a concern for the high labor costs when it came to his jobs.
DeWalt would often rig up special machines to help out his employers. He was eventually offered a position as head of a woodworking mill. They manufactures a little of everything from boxes to houses. There was way too much work. The company president refused to increase payroll. He wanted more work from his employees. DeWalt designed a yoke that was then attached to a saw. He mounted this on a standard arm. The saw could be lowered, raised, moved at an angle, slid back and forth, or tilted. It was found that this saw did the work of four men.
In 1922, DeWalt became superintendent of Seabrook Farms. It was here that the first radial arm machine was created. In 1924, the DeWalt Products Company was formed. Plant offices were located in Leola Pennsylvania. The big product of this company was known as the DeWalt Wonder-Worker. This was an electrical woodworking machine.
In 1929, the DeWalt Company moved to a more modern plant and office building located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
The DeWalt Company was completely reorganized in 1947. It was re-incorporated under DeWalt Inc. DeWalt extended services into Canada in 1953. This was a wholly owned subsidiary named DeWalt Canada Ltd. By 1955, 40,000 feet were added to the manufacturing plant. In 1960, DeWalt obtained U.S. and Canadian patents to the Bennett Two-Way Saw from Bennett Manufacturing Company. 8,400 feet are added to the company in 1961. DeWitt kept continuing to add space and grow. In 1967 the grinder was introduced.
Metal cutting machines for non-ferrous and ferrous metals were added in 1971. By 1989, DeWalt did not see the need for radial arm saws and they were discontinued in North America. Dewalt introduced a new line of electric power tools in 1992. These were portable and came with many acessories. They were designed for remodelers, woodworkers, and residential contractors. A revolutionary system was launched in 1994 that included over 30 new cordless tools. They were the most powerful at that time. The cordless system included screwdrivers, drill/drivers, impact wrenches, impact drivers, flashlights, saws, and the first combination drill/driver/hammerdrill.
In 1999, DaWalt added a driver to the NASCAR Busch Series. In 2000, they entered into the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. At this time, DeWalt purchases momentum Laser, Inc. and the Emglo Compressor Company.
DeWalt now has a tool line that is made up of over 200 electric power tools. There are over 800 accessories that include drills, hammer drills, many saws, grinders, sanders, trimmers, routers, plate grinders and more!
Although DeWalt started from humble beginnings, it has grown to be one of the largest tool manufacturers today. This company is founded on a hard working honest history and quality products.
